Question of the Day

Hi everyone!

In the last couple of weeks I've been thinking of ways to break up the inevitable monotony of fairly long RaceBlog entries. So I thought, why not do a Question of the Day? Even though I don't like the title- hopefully I'll come up with something a little more clever soon- the idea sounds good. So the plan is to put up the question here and on Twitter, where you can follow along by following us at http://www.twitter.com/theraceblog . and with that, here's our first Question of the Day!

Do you think that when white people tan, they are trying to be black?

Comment your answers. And don't forget to follow us on Twitter!

  1. My best friends at my school talk about tanning all the time. I even went out with them a couple times to lay out by the river. However, not once did any of them mention tanning because "they are trying to be black". They just think that their pale skins aren't as attractive as someone with darker toned skin. And this goes hand in hand with black women buying Fair & White products to lighten their skin color. It all comes down to how that person see themselves and the personal satisfaction they get from doing these things.

  2. TTR,

Thanks for your comment. I would venture to say that a lot of our race issues stem from putting our race before being an individual and making individual choices. I'd agree that most people tan because they'd rather not be pale. But what of the thousands of women who painstakingly bleach their dark skin? Clearly they'd prefer not to have it, but why?

  3. First want to say that I really like you blogspot!! Tackling racism in america is great and needs the exposure. Lack of Understanding is the leading cause of racism I think!! Well I also wanted to share one of my book ideas with you. I really like your writing style and I think you could help out with a book Im putting together about racism. Very comical but yet informtive. I really think you could help out. If you are interested contact me at fighthere@gmail.com

  4. A lot of darker people grew up around people who thought that light skin "black" people were better looking and got what they wanted because they are closer in color to white (or caucasian whatever u prefer)people but I don't really know if white people tan to look black...
